The Story of the Special, Heart-Shaped Tombstones

Near Tihany, next to Route 71 you can find a famous little graveyard where heart-shaped tombstones (Ms. Pink said apple-shaped) can be found. According to the legend, the unique tombstones were fabricated by a local mason apprentice from white marble quarried nearby. Here you can find more than sixty tombstones are made between 1808 and 1840, which are unique to Hungary. Some of the signs became unreadable through the passing of the time. Tombstones like these can only be found in few places (for example in Balatonfüred’s graveyard).

You can also find a gallery in Balatonudvari. Here you can see the works of painters, potters and other artists along with exhibitions of local history and ethnography.
